Fish

Okoń

So far 29 species of fish have been recorded in the waters of the Park. Some part of them does not appear in the PNP waters today, in what was earlier connected with the function of fishing households. From these there are four species: the swamp minnow, the amur bitterling, the European weatherfish, and the spined loach, which are under species protection. The swamp minnow deserves particular attention. It is one of the rarest fish in Poland; it inhabits small water reservoirs on turfland substratum. Its positions in the Park and the buffer zone belong to the most numerous in the country. This fish lives gregariously; forming little shoals and grows up to 14 cm. It is a relict species in the country, and the border of its reach runs through central Poland.
The spined loach and the European weatherfish belonging to the family Cobitidae and they lead a lifestyle on the bottom and are connected with reservoirs where the bottoms are covered with ooze, and where they eagerly bury themselves.
The types of behaviour associated with the procreation of the amur bitterling are also interesting.
The female, with the help of special ovipositor, spawns inside the shell of the living swollen river mussel or duck mussel. Young fish hatch in there and will spend 30-40 days inside. This entire process takes place without harm to the mussel.
